What hides in a screenshot
Screenshots of real work carry more than the problem you’re asking about:
- API keys and tokens in a terminal, an
.envfile or a settings page - Customer names, emails and phone numbers in a dashboard or a support tool
- Card numbers, IBANs and invoices in a billing page
- Other tabs, notifications and chat previews around the edges
Four steps before you send
- Crop to the question. Select just the error, the chart or the form, not the whole screen. Smart snap fits the panel under the pointer with one click.
- Redact automatically. Auto-redact finds emails, phone and card numbers, IBANs and API keys and blurs them, on your computer.
- Look it over. Patterns miss names and unusual secrets. Blur anything else with the Blur tool.
- Send it. Send to opens ChatGPT, Claude, Codex or Cursor with the cleaned capture pasted in.
Or keep it on your computer
If the screenshot can’t leave your machine at all, Ask with a local model through Ollama or LM Studio. The model runs on your computer and nothing is sent anywhere. For just the text, Copy text reads it on your computer too, so you can paste only the lines that matter.
Questions
Do AI chat apps keep my screenshots?
That depends on the provider and your plan’s settings, so check its privacy settings. The safe habit is to assume anything you paste is kept, and to send only what the question needs.
Is blurring enough to hide a secret?
Glintshot’s blur is drawn into the image you copy or save, in blocks coarse enough that text can’t be read, so there’s no layer to remove. Still, if a key ended up in something you already shared, treat it as seen and rotate it.
