What Glintshot does on each system, how to get more out of screenshots, and how it compares with the tools you might know.

What Glintshot does
- AI featuresRead the text in a capture, blur the secrets in it, or ask a model what it shows. The first two run on your computer; for the rest you pick the model, local or with your own key.
- Copy text (OCR)An error in a dialog, a line in a video, a table in a PDF you can’t select. Drag over it, choose Copy text, and paste the words wherever you need them.
- Auto-redactAuto-redact reads your capture, finds the emails, phone numbers, card numbers and keys in it, and blurs each one. You check the result, move a blur if you like, and copy.
- Ask AITwo ways to get an answer about what’s on your screen: send the capture straight into the AI app you already use, or ask right on the screenshot and read the answer there.
- BurstPoint Burst at part of the screen and it takes frames: on a timer, each time the picture changes, or each time you press. Keep the ones you want, or save them as a GIF.
On your computer and in your browser
- MacGlintshot lives in the menu bar and wakes on ⌘ ⇧ 9. Drag over anything, mark it up, and it’s on your clipboard, ready to paste.
- WindowsGlintshot takes PrtSc, so the habit you have keeps working. Drag over anything, mark it up, and paste it into a chat, a ticket or an email.
- LinuxThe same fast capture, editor and AI features as on Mac and Windows, packaged as an AppImage that updates itself and a .deb.
- Browser extensionCapture a region, what’s in view, the whole page or just one element, mark it up in the same editor as the desktop app, and copy or download it.
How to
- Scrolling screenshotsA long page, a chat thread or a document that doesn’t fit on screen: scroll through it once and get one tall image.
- PrtSc and the Snipping ToolWindows 11 gives the Print Screen key to the Snipping Tool. One switch in Settings hands it back to the screenshot app you chose.
- Screenshots on WaylandOn Wayland, apps can’t read the screen or grab keys on their own; the desktop does it for them. That’s safer, and it changes how screenshot apps are set up.
- Screenshots and AI, safelyPasting a screenshot into an AI chat sends everything in it, including the API key in the corner. A few seconds of checking keeps it out.
- Bug report screenshotsA good bug screenshot answers three questions before anyone asks: where is it, what happened, and what should have happened.
Compared with other tools
- Lightshot alternativeSame keys, same drag-and-copy habit. Glintshot adds Linux, marks you can still change, text copying and redaction, and it doesn’t upload your screenshots anywhere.
- CleanShot X alternativeCleanShot X is one of the best screenshot apps on the Mac, and it stays on the Mac. If you also work on Windows or Linux, Glintshot gives you one app with the same keys everywhere.
- Snagit alternativeSnagit is a full documentation suite with video, templates and step recorders. If you mostly capture, mark up and paste, Glintshot does that for free, on Linux too.
- ShareX alternativeShareX is free, powerful and Windows only. Glintshot is smaller and simpler, and it runs on Mac, Windows and Linux with the same keys and tools.
- Best screenshot toolsEight screenshot tools side by side, checked on each maker’s own site in October 2026. We make one of them, so we say where the others are better.
- Best AI screenshot tools“AI” on a screenshot tool can mean text recognition, automatic redaction or a model that explains what’s on screen. Here’s who does what, and where your screenshot goes.
