Where Snagit is the better choice
Snagit is a documentation suite. It records video with a webcam, turns clicks into step-by-step guides, simplifies screenshots into diagrams, and ships templates for manuals and training. If that’s your job, it earns its subscription. Glintshot does none of those.
Where Glintshot fits
- Everyday screenshots, free. Capture, eight annotation tools, copy, save and Send to cost nothing, with no limit, on as many computers as you like.
- Linux. Snagit runs on Mac and Windows; Glintshot also runs on Linux, on X11 and Wayland.
- Keys and tokens. Auto-redact also blurs API keys, GitHub and Slack tokens and JWTs, which matters when you screenshot terminals and dashboards.
- Your own AI. Ask uses a local model or your own API key, so there are no credits and no extra plan.
Questions
Is Snagit a one-time purchase?
Not as of October 2026. TechSmith sells Snagit Individual as a subscription at $39 per user per year, and also includes it in Camtasia plans.
Does Glintshot record video like Snagit?
No. Glintshot captures still images, scrolling pages and Burst frames, which it can save as a GIF. For screen recording with a webcam and narration, Snagit or a dedicated recorder is the better tool.
Is Glintshot affiliated with TechSmith?
No. Glintshot is made by Kubicl Technologies and isn’t affiliated with TechSmith or Snagit.
